Hand made Christmas gifts - hair jewelry

I finally finished my mixed media hair jewelry in time for Christmas!  Not just any hair jewelry, but sparkly star hair clips made with german glass glitter. German glass glitter is unique because it contains ground up glass and sterling silver which will tarnish over time and create a vintage look to the glitter. My small stars are about 1.5 inches and my large stars are approximately 2.5 inches in height and length. I used a die cut cardstock star as a template to cut wool felt, then I hand sewed the stars together. This project was time consuming because I had to let the glitter dry over a period of three days. I also had to do it at night after my children were asleep since they find the sparkly glitter so enchanting and would like to play with it.  It's all I can do to keep my two year old daughter from playing with the finished hair clips. I've promised her that I will make her some like mommies, but not with the glass glitter!

Happy 2013 Ya'll!  Hope your holidays were merry and bright!

We had a rough Christmas this year. The week before Christmas I completely panicked. Would I be able to get everything done in time? It turns out that it didn't matter if I got everything done,  as we all succumbed to the stomach flu. My two toddlers couldn't keep anything in their bodies and momma downing immodium (only  4 pills in a 24 hour time frame- I needed more), while my hubby had a milder version than the rest of us.

The Friday before Christmas my beloved Aunt Betty was hospitalized for an injury to her head after she had fallen. Couldn't go see her when I was chained to the toilet. While on the way to family Christmas service on Christmas Eve I found out my brother - in - law's father had died that day.

My aunt was discharged from ICU this weekend and went back to her home with hospice care. I had planned to take the twins to see her on New Years Day. It was too late, she shuffled off this mortal coil early Tuesday morning.

So this holiday has not been the season of rejoicing I had expected it to be. I had planned to see my family at happy parties and dinners but instead changed runny, poopy diapers and cleaned up toddler barfs (or
"spilling" as my children call it) between running to the potty myself.

Hoping to bring happiness and good fortune into our lives this year, I made Jalepeno Black Eye Pea dip, a favorite of mine on New Years Eve. My son ate two bowls  of it, he enjoyed it so much.  I ran out of the dip before the Rose Bowl Parade was over!  I can not claim the recipe, it's from the Dallas Junior League cookbook, South of the Fork:

3 cans of Black Eye Peas (I use Bush beans with jalepenos)
1/2 pound of sharp cheddar cheese (I actually used one pound of medium cheddar cheese)
3-4 whole jalepenos   (I used 3 tbs of diced jalepenos - b/c of my toddlers)
1/2 white onion
one 4 oz can of green chilies
one tsp jalepeno juice
and a stick of butter

melt the butter and cheese together in a double broiler, then add the rest of the ingredients until thoroughly mixed and heated.

I recommend using a very sturdy tortilla chip like tostitos dippers, I had purchased a thinner tortilla chip which kept breaking into the dip.
This dip is also good in scrambled eggs, and  flour/corn tortillas.
